In 2015 India launched its Smart City Mission. This focused on creating showcases of 100 selected cities over five years. The focus of the programme was to develop energy and environmental technologies, but also to create networked services and inclusive growth. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has is among the key actors tasked with facilitating this development. CII has signed Agreements with a number of countries to focus this engagement. Sweden through Teknikföretagen, signed a country Agreement with CII in 2016.

Following this Agreement, the Smart City Sweden – India Group was launched by Teknikföretagen, together with SIBC (Sweden India Business Council) and IVL (Swedish Environmental Institute). Smart City Sweden – India Group aims to coordinate all initiatives within the Smart City arena, with a focus on India. The aim is to contribute towards, and strengthen opportunities for Swedish companies to establish themselves in India.

The workshop on May 29th will present the journey of the India Group, the lessons learnt this far, and this next steps. The main case study focus will be ‘Sweden Nagar’ in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Maharashtra. The India Group has been given the opportunity to develop a focused showcase of Swedish technology in a pre-selected urban area. Pimpri is one of the richest municipalities in India and about twenty Swedish companies are already in place in the area. Pimpri’s decision makers have allocated resources to implement cooperation with Sweden’s actors. The first project in this showcase will be on of District Cooling. An Appointment Letter has been given to the Smart City Sweden India Group to commence work. And a project office will be set up in June.
